Synopsis
Jiro Azuma is a high schooler descended from a long line of shinobi, raised by his grandfather and gifted with an unusual ability: he can communicate with animals. Rough around the edges but warm-hearted underneath, Jiro's soft spot for stray cats and dogs sets his life on a very different course one day in the woods.
There he finds an injured black cat, only to discover it's actually Rago, a mysterious mononoke once feared as the legendary "Black Star of Doom." When Rago fuses with Jiro to save his life, the two become inseparable, gaining tremendous power together but also drawing the attention of hostile spirits eager to exploit that power for themselves.
Their sudden bond also catches the eye of the Bureau of Espionage, a covert government agency tasked with monitoring and containing mononoke. Rather than being detained, Jiro and Rago are recruited into its ranks, thrown into a shinobi-style battle against the spirit world that neither of them ever asked for.

Black Torch leans into everything that makes classic Shonen Jump action fun: a hot-headed but big-hearted lead, a mysterious partner with a dark past, and a shady government agency pulling the strings in the background. The Jiro-and-Rago dynamic carries the show, and 100Studio's action choreography brings real weight to the shinobi-vs-mononoke fights.
The pacing is brisk since the source manga wrapped after just five volumes, so don't expect a slow burn — this is a tightly packed, momentum-driven story that gets to the good stuff fast.
