Synopsis

Amane Fujimiya is a quiet, somewhat withdrawn high schooler who moved out on his own and settled into a bit of a messy, take-out-fueled routine. Right next door lives Mahiru Shiina, the girl their whole school calls "Angel" for her looks, her grades, and her seemingly perfect composure. The two have barely exchanged a word, until a rainy evening when Amane spots her sitting alone outside and quietly hands her his umbrella, expecting nothing in return.

That small, unremarkable act of kindness is what breaks the ice between them. Mahiru, uncomfortable with owing anyone a favor, starts checking in on Amane, and is quietly appalled by how he's been living. Before long she's cooking his meals, tidying his apartment, and generally refusing to let him fend for himself, all while insisting she's only doing it for her own peace of mind. What begins as reluctant neighborly concern slowly turns into something warmer, as both of them let their guard down and reveal the loneliness they'd been hiding behind their public personas.

At its heart, the show is a gentle, slow-building romance about two people who are used to being alone learning what it feels like to be cared for. It leans heavily into cozy, home-cooked-dinner comfort rather than dramatic plot twists, following Amane and Mahiru's relationship as it grows episode by episode, alongside a supporting cast of friends and family who slowly get pulled into their orbit.

Our Thoughts / Our Verdict

This is comfort-food romance done right. Nothing about the premise is flashy — a boy who can't cook and a girl who won't let that slide — but the show earns its warmth honestly, one shared dinner at a time, instead of leaning on drama or contrived misunderstandings.

Mahiru and Amane are genuinely easy to root for. Their relationship grows at a believable pace, and the quieter moments where each of them lets their guarded, lonelier side show hit harder than most of the genre's usual romantic beats. The animation and character art stay clean and expressive throughout, and the soundtrack knows exactly when to stay soft and let a scene breathe.

If you want grand plot twists, look elsewhere — but if you're after a gentle, sincere slow-burn romance to unwind with, this is one of the most wholesome entries the genre has produced in recent years. Highly recommended for fans of slice-of-life romance who enjoy watching two lonely people slowly learn how to let someone in. — Chief Editor
