Synopsis

Edward and Alphonse Elric are brothers who once tried to bring their mother back to life through alchemy's most forbidden taboo: human transmutation. The attempt goes catastrophically wrong — Edward loses a leg, and in a desperate act to save his brother's soul, he sacrifices an arm to bind Alphonse's spirit to a suit of armor. Their mother is not restored.

Now, with Edward's body partially replaced by automail prosthetics, the brothers travel across the war-torn nation of Amestris in search of the Philosopher's Stone, a legendary artifact rumored to bypass alchemy's laws of equivalent exchange and restore what they lost. As state alchemists in the Amestrian military, their journey draws them into a far larger conspiracy involving mysterious immortal beings, a corrupt military state, and a plot that threatens the entire country.

A faithful adaptation of Hiromu Arakawa's complete manga, Brotherhood follows Ed and Al through betrayal, sacrifice, and revelation as long-buried truths about their world — and themselves — come to light.

Our Thoughts / Our Verdict

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood earns its reputation as one of the greatest anime ever made. As a faithful, complete adaptation of Hiromu Arakawa's manga, it delivers a tightly plotted story that balances thrilling action, dark political intrigue, and genuinely moving character arcs without ever losing sight of its core themes: sacrifice, the value of human life, and the price of pursuing power without limits.

Bones' production holds up remarkably well even years later, with confident direction from Yasuhiro Irie and a memorable score from Akira Senju that elevates the series' biggest emotional beats. The voice cast — led by Romi Park and Rie Kugimiya as the Elric brothers — brings real weight and warmth to every relationship in Ed and Al's journey.

It's a rare series that satisfies as both a gripping shounen adventure and a thoughtful meditation on loss and redemption. Essential viewing, whether you're new to anime or a longtime fan. — DIDARUL ISLAM [Chief Editor]
