Synopsis

Your Name. is a beautiful, award-winning anime movie directed by Makoto Shinkai, the same filmmaker behind "Weathering With You" and "Suzume." It tells the story of two teenagers living completely different lives who end up sharing something extraordinary: their bodies.

Mitsuha Miyamizu is a high school girl living in a small, traditional town called Itomori, deep in the mountains. She helps her family run a Shinto shrine, but she's tired of small-town life and secretly dreams of living in Tokyo instead. Meanwhile, in the middle of that busy city, a boy named Taki Tachibana goes about his own everyday life, juggling school, a part-time job, and his dream of becoming an architect.

One day, without any warning, Mitsuha wakes up in Taki's body, and Taki wakes up in hers. Confused and a little panicked, they slowly realize they've somehow swapped places, and it doesn't just happen once. The body swaps keep happening on random days, forcing both of them to live pieces of each other's lives, going to school, meeting friends, and figuring out how the other one behaves. To keep from causing too much chaos, they start leaving notes and messages for each other on their phones, and over time, even though they've never actually met in person, they begin to form a real, close bond.

Then, just as suddenly as it started, the body swapping stops. Taki decides he has to find Mitsuha in person, but as he searches, he discovers something that changes everything he thought he knew about their connection. Without giving too much away, Your Name. turns into a moving story about fate, memory, and how far someone will go to reach a person who matters to them, all set against the backdrop of a looming comet and the quiet town of Itomori.

Combining Shinkai's signature breathtaking visuals with an unforgettable soundtrack by the band Radwimps, Your Name. became one of the highest-grossing anime films of all time for good reason. It's a story that mixes romance, light comedy, and real emotion into something that stays with you long after the credits roll.

Our Thoughts / Our Verdict

Your Name. is one of those rare anime movies that lives up to every bit of its reputation, so it's an easy S rank across the board from us.

Story: S. The body-swap setup sounds simple at first, but the film uses it to build something much bigger: a story about connection, memory, and fate that keeps surprising you right up until the end. The pacing is excellent, the mystery unfolds naturally, and the emotional payoff in the final act genuinely earns its tears.

Animation: S. This is peak Makoto Shinkai. The lighting, the skies, the tiny background details in Itomori and Tokyo alike all feel alive. Some shots are so detailed they look almost like photographs, and that level of care shows in nearly every frame.

Soundtrack: S. Radwimps delivers one of the most memorable anime film scores in recent memory. The songs aren't just background music, they're woven directly into key scenes, and the main theme alone is enough to give you chills.

If you've somehow never watched Your Name., this is the movie that helped kick off the current wave of love for Makoto Shinkai's work worldwide, and it's easy to see why. It's romantic without being cheesy, emotional without feeling manipulative, and gorgeous from start to finish. Whether you're a longtime anime fan or someone who's never watched anime before, Your Name. is one of the safest, most rewarding recommendations we can make. — DIDARUL ISLAM [Chief Editor]
