Synopsis

Wakana Gojo is a quiet high schooler whose grandfather runs a small hina doll shop. Ever since childhood, Wakana has dreamed of becoming a kashirashi, a craftsman who sculpts the faces of these traditional dolls, but he keeps that passion to himself after being mocked for it years earlier. Without anyone to share his hobby, he drifts through school as a loner, sewing quietly in the home ec room after class.

His routine is upended when Marin Kitagawa, one of the most popular girls in his class, catches him at his sewing machine. Rather than judging him, Marin is thrilled — she's a passionate cosplayer who has always struggled to bring her favorite characters' costumes to life, and she asks Wakana to help her make one.

What starts as an awkward, mismatched partnership between the reserved doll-maker and the outgoing cosplay fan slowly grows into a close friendship built on shared craftsmanship, late nights of stitching, and cosplay photoshoots, with both of them changing each other for the better along the way.

Our Thoughts / Our Verdict

This is the season that put My Dress-Up Darling on the map, and it's easy to see why. Wakana and Marin's dynamic works because neither of them fits the mold: he's not the typical awkward protagonist, and she's not a shallow "gyaru" stereotype — they genuinely respect and learn from each other.

CloverWorks put real love into the craft-focused visuals here, from close-up shots of stitching and fabric to lovingly rendered cosplay reveals, giving the hobby itself as much spotlight as the romance.

It's a warm, sincere first season that earns its popularity honestly, balancing fan service with a surprisingly tender coming-of-age story. Easily one of the standout rom-coms of its year, and essential viewing before jumping into Season 2. — DIDARUL ISLAM [Chief Editor]
